Basic Sans is a grotesque sans serif typeface designed by Daniel Hernández and published by Latinotype in 2016. Functional and neutral at first glance, it hides plenty of small details that give it a personality of its own. With seven weights, matching italics and an alternate version, Basic Sans is built for branding, publishing and digital interfaces, and this page is its official home.
About Basic Sans Font
Basic Sans is a sans serif typeface designed by Daniel Hernández and published in 2016 by Latinotype, an independent type foundry from Chile. Its premise is in the name: a family of grotesque features with a functional, clean and neutral appearance, a basic sans serif font that stays out of the way on paper and on screen.
Look closer and the Basic Sans typeface reveals many small details that set it apart from generic grotesques and give text a warm, recognizable color. It is well suited for publishing projects and medium sized text as well as branding, posters and headlines. Basic Sans is also the starting point of a wider system that includes Basic Sans Narrow and Basic Sans Condensed.
Styles & Weights
The Basic Sans font family includes 28 styles organized in two subfamilies of 14 styles each. The Basic family covers seven weights (Thin, ExtraLight, Light, Regular, SemiBold, Basic Sans Bold and Basic Sans Black), each with a matching true italic.
The Alt family mirrors the same weights and italics with alternate characters, such as K, a, g, k and y, for a different texture in display settings.
For tighter layouts, Basic Sans Narrow and Basic Sans Condensed extend the system with narrower widths. Use the type tester above to compare every weight, or open the full glyph set to explore each style in detail.
Basic Sans Font Pairing
As a neutral grotesque, Basic Sans is an easy partner for typefaces with a stronger personality. Expressive serifs work especially well in headlines: within the Latinotype catalog, Basic Sans pairs naturally with Recoleta for warm, retro branding and with Juana for elegant editorial layouts, while Basic Sans handles body text, interfaces and captions.
For a single family solution, combine Basic Sans Black or Bold headlines with Regular and Light text, and switch to Basic Sans Condensed when space is tight.
Language Support
Basic Sans supports 206 Latin based languages across Europe, the Americas, Africa and Oceania, which makes it a reliable choice for multilingual brands and publications.
Each style includes between 413 and 418 glyphs with OpenType features such as ligatures, fractions and case-sensitive forms.
